How can design encourage New Zealanders to establish a confident understanding of Japanese food and its embedded cultural etiquette in order to sustain cross-cultural relationships?

Proposal
Japan and New Zealand have been maintaining a friendly relationship since the post World War II period, with Japan being a major trading partner with New Zealand. New links were established after the war and Kiwi culture has continued to be enriched by Japanese influences. Japanese food culture is one of the few aspects that were inherited from Japan and has continued to do so these days. The majority of Japanese restaurants in New Zealand serve sushi and others may offer a variety of other cuisines. However connections to their original cultural roots are often ignored which starts to become problematic, and people start to question the lack of authenticity that surrounds our food culture. We often become distant to these cultural practices, leading to a disconnection in our relationships with other ethnicity groups.


Through design we aim to gently promote and encourage our audience to have more respect and appreciation for food practices of different cultures that can be found embedded in etiquette and table manners while we consume foreign food. It’s good to expand our understanding of other ethnicities and the cultural practices that differs from ours in order to establish and sustain cross-cultural relationships.


Questionare Feedback & answers: 
Q1. Do you consider another culture's customs or way of eating when dining at a restaurant?
If so, how would you act?

-If I know them. Im often unaware of some though.

-Yes, always. Unless im ignorant about the customs.

-Coming from a Indian background, I feel very "white" when I order mild butter chicken curry.

-I do at times but then I look at how I feel uncomfortable regardless

Q2. Does the food you eat or cook have a cultural connection to you? Does this affect the way you eat the food?

-Giving food is an affectionate act for me, so when someone gives me food, I value it highly.
