Notes from feedback of shared moment- Other Research

Understanding Japanese Etiquette (multiculturism)- Enriching and sustaining New Zealand’s global relationships by shifting perceptions. Creating a shift from what is unfamiliar to being familiar. NZ is becoming an increasingly multicultural nation with the percentage of immigration and population counts of Asian decent increasing each year.


-There's a myth that you can get pizza in japan without cheese. Cheese not good enough for the asian pizza? Would Italians appreciate the jab of them ratting pizza without cheese?

-A Dominance in Multiculturalism

-Can import customs and they can be changed into something different

-Keeping the old traditions but also adopting new traditions

-Authenticity issue? People not knowing how it is done. Open source community - People may appropriate other cultures and don't fully understand the tradition or how it is actually done?

-There is sushi here that Japanese people have not seen before.

-Values of culture reinforced

-Creating a relationship where people are taught to eat traditionally

-There are differences in drinking tea in china compared to in Japan

-Go to Japanese restaurants and see how they do it? -may be too westernized here though

-expectation that people must understand customs- western

-Africa or Asia they tell/teach you how to follow their customs- respectful to visitors


What design Approach?

-Result of limitations of not being able to get certain delicacy in NZ

-Class,money market affect what is found/experience

-Someone to tell you that something is better

-Hearsay-people say something is authentic but is it really?

-info graphics, how to do things at the restaurant

-A tangible user experience that people can see

-designing chopsticks that teach you how to use them

-find as many mannerisms/ behaviors from all cultures to see relationships and compare

-teaching and guiding

-etiquette and experience

-Experience it and someone teaches you?

What is ettiquette?
According to wikipedia it is a code of behavior that delineates expectations for social behavior according to contemporary conventional norms within a societysocial class, or group.

how to use chopsticks:

Pouring soy sauce on your white rice is considered bad manners. One of the best things about Japan is the food (assuming you like rice and the ocean) and some of the first things a foreigner should learn are how to use chopsticks and how to eat sushi.

-sticking chopsticks in food is similar to something that’s only done as funeral offering
-No taking food with the ends of the chopsticks you eat with, Japanese people don’t believe in germs. It’s against their religion.

-From a 2013 census it is estimated that the population of the Asian ethnicity will increase from an Asian population (0.54 million in 2013) to 0.81–0.92 million in 2025 and to 1.06–1.26 million in 2038. The next census is in october 2016.

-From the last 2013 census 11.8% (1,415,121) of the total population stated that they were Asian in the New Zealand population. The Asian ethnicity is a growing population, however there is only a strong focus on educating about Maori culture and not other Asian cultures in NZ. It was a larger increase compared to the increase of 137,301 to 142,770 in Maori population.

-In some areas of NZ there are higher populations of Asians. Such as in Auckland it was reported that there were 301,233 asians living in auckland. An increase from 2006 (234,779).

Immigration to NZ


In February 2016 compared with February 2015:   
  • Visitor arrivals (373,400) were up 29,900. The biggest changes were in arrivals from:
    • Korea (up 2,800)
    • Japan (up 1,900)
    • China (down 2,800)
Will try to research more into:
Japan's 47 prefectures divided into eight regions: Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Chubu, Kinki, Chugoku, Shikoku, and Kyushu-Okinawa. Because each region has its own , customs, and unique traditional culture for food.

Why?
The reason behind wanting to encourage people to place value in manners and etiquette is because it is so much more rewarding being able to experience another culture outside your own. I know this as I was able to experience two cultures growing up as half western and half asian.

Being part asian, the language aspect I had with that part has been lost through the years of living in New Zealand. However, the way we share food and way of eating still remains the same. What I've come to understand is if something isn't practiced the connection with it is lost. Etiquette is a reminder of how important food is as it is one of the most important activities next to breathing which allows people to socialize with each other. Understanding another culture's eating practices creates a connection and understanding of another culture as a whole, as the way of eating is widely influenced by other elements such as spirituality etc.


In a contemporary era, things are constantly changing and cultures are adopting techniques of other cultures. This is why it's important to learn ways of other cultures, in order to improve and better the current culture.
