Turning Japanese - になってきて、日本 from Nunca Silva on Vimeo.
"Turning Japanese" is a catchy New Wave song from 1980 by Vapor which I couldn't resist using as the soundtrack for this video shot in Tokyo in July 2014 on Mori Tower. This tall structure in Roppongi Hills houses Tokyo City Views and the Mori Art Museum. Clips from both are mixed in this video.
Visiting Japan, there is a chance of you turning a bit Japanese as you try to conform to some of the more obvious rules of etiquette - lining up at the subway, not eating or smoking on the streets, very polite formal ways of interaction. At the same time, you will probably realize from a Western viewpoint just how different and distant a culture the Japanese are. Whether you find this intriguing or just alienating, there is little chance for a foreign-born and raised person living in Japan to ever turn "fully" Japanese. Even once you've mastered not only the spoken language, but also the very difficult writing systems, as I seem to have done with the help of Google translator, a large gap remains between you and the natives. This is of course an experience that most immigrants make, though the size of the gap may be - objectively and subjectively - somewhat less pronounced in other places."
