Thesis:
Food is an accumulation, a function of experiences and history. Food is the single great unifier across cultures. It is a form of cultural identity.
Proposal:
People connect to their culture through similar food patterns. It is a way of retaining a cultural identity. People from different cultures eat different food. The ingredients, methods of preparation, preservation techniques, and types of food eaten at different meals vary among cultures. Japan has continued to develop to the nation it is today. Food inspiration from japan has made its way across the globe. Japanese restaurants in New Zealand serve sushi and many other varieties of food. Historically Japanese food has come a long way since WWII. Japanese food is now a mix between techniques from other cultures, history and religion. The openness to cultural influences has created the flavours that we now experience as Japanese food. Through design I hope to create a guide to Japanese food. This is to encourage the audience to gain a new appreciation for food and the culture that surrounds it.
Questions:
Do you consider a culture's custom when dining at a restaurant? if so, how do you act?
Do you often eat or cook food that has a cultural connection to you?
