What can we do differently?
In the market, I found that majority of Japanese (travel) guides that are accessible to their audiences often focus on ideal locations and food generated for tourist. However there is a lack of explanation on the cultural background surrounding Japanese food and etiquette.
The code of etiquette governs the expectation of social behaviour in Japan and is considered very important to their culture. Table manners are sets of behaviours which are required while eating, consisting of history and ancient tradition that trace back to original roots. The reason why these behaviours still exists today is to maintain their customs in order to strongly support their ideals, unique aesthetic style, and furthermore, support their identity
We intend on creating an interactive guide to encourage our audience and facilitate their desire to emphasise with another culture values in order to reinforce social bonds.
Gap in the market:
(feel free to add)
(a type of survival kit to food and etiquette) Facilitating ways to learn etiquette in a fun way.
-A way of interactivity could be games or props that help with learning certain etiquette.
For example
-learning chopsticks= a game where the person practices using chopsticks
-learning manners and food etiquette= cards with different behaviors (categorized by when you use them)
Book interactivity:
fold, unfold and reveal- a story that unfolds, so that the user can discover parts by interacting with the book/story.
A background to the story. A way of understanding why food and etiquette is the way it is today.
